The UNDP Disaster Risk Management (DRM) project at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, under the patronage of the Minister of Education Mr. Marwan Hamade, organized the launch of an educational board about disaster risk in Lebanon.
A large number of students from several public schools in different regions participated in the launching event. The event took place at the UNESCO Palace on Monday 27 February, in the presence of UNDP's Country Director Mr. Luca Renda, Ministry of Education and Higher Education’s (MEHE) Director General Mr. Fadi Yarak, and representatives of donor countries.
The game was created and produced by the UNDP DRM project, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and supported by the European Union, Switzerland's embassy in Beirut, as well as the governments of Kuwait and the Netherlands.
“A famous Arab proverb says ‘What we learn at a young age is carved in stone’. Indeed raising children's awareness on disaster preparedness is the best way to ensure well prepared generations and resilient communities that could effectively resist any risk of disasters”, Mr. Luca Renda added.
The educational board game, "If you don't know, it's a disaster", targets children from 8 to 15 years old, to raise their awareness on disaster preparedness. Through questions, quests, and rewards children will learn how to deal with an earthquake and its aftermath, as well as whom to call when their home is on fire. It familiarizes children with the different natural hazards that could happen in Lebanon, like earthquakes, tsunami, landslide, floods, and forest fires, teaching them indirectly how to be prepared for such events and how to act to save their lives.
“We would like to mention on this occasion that the concept of disaster risk reduction is a modern and fundamental concept, and the ministry will work to incorporate it into the curriculum in order to achieve sustainable development in this area”, stated Mr. Fadi Yarak.
During the event, children watched a presentation of the game and how to play it, as well as a theater play, about disaster risk and renewable energy produced by Kahayal association called "Sneezing Firas".
This game was successfully implemented due to the fruitful cooperation and hard work that was put in action, which will eventually lead to a brighter generation aware of how to help oneself and the people around in case a disaster strikes.
